Job Profile: E-Learning Business Development Manager

E-Learning Business Development Manager | Learning & Development Jobs | FGS Recruitment

Strong sales person? Passion for eLearning? Enjoys hunting for new business? A career as an eLearning Business Development Manager could be perfect for you.

What does an eLearning Business Development Manager do?

There are usually two types of eLearning Business Development positions. The first being pure new business with your key role being to pro-actively seek and win new business. The second is a blend of new business and account management with the Business Development Manager looking after and growing existing accounts whilst also seeking and maintaining new business.

The exact responsibilities will vary from business to business which is good news as you are bound to find a role and company that is perfect for you as an individual. You may be required to work alone or as part of a team so think about what environment you work best in. The role may be a work from home role or you could be office based. The role could also be field based visiting existing e-learning clients and attending appointments with potential new customers.

What skills are required to work within e-Learning as a Business Development Manager?

As with any sales role, people skills are essential. You need to have personality and manner to allow you to build rapport and trust with existing customers and to entice new e-learning clients to work with the company. It goes without saying that communication skills are essential but so are listening skills. Customers and potential new clients don’t want someone to talk at them for the entire duration of the meeting. They want someone who will listen to their needs and requirements and then take this information to provide a solution that suits them.

To work within eLearning, you will need to have an understanding of what eLearning is and how it works. Crossover from backgrounds such as technology or IT sales roles is also beneficial however you will then need to learn the processes and benefits of the particular eLearning products or services.

What about qualifications?

In order to work in a sales role such as business development, no formal qualifications are usually required. However most employers will look for a basic standard of education such as five A-C GCSE grades with English and Maths being essential. Other employers will require A-levels and a degree.

What is a typical eLearning Business Development Manager paid?

As with any business development role, you will likely be paid a base salary with commission on top. Commission is worked out from your sales targets and you should be given an OTE (On Target Earnings) to enable you to work out whether the job is suitable from a financial perspective. We tend to find that the split between base salary and commission is equal with the OTE being double the base salary.

In terms of base salary, those starting out in a business development career can expect the base salary to be around £20-25K but this will depend on location. As you progress up the career ladder, base salaries can reach upwards of £40K. We have worked on more senior e-learning Business Development Manager roles with a salary of £55K and an OTE of £110K so it’s definitely an attractive salary.
